Experience matters to Davis Steven Davis believes Rangers can learn the lessons from 2008 as they once again bid to juggle domestic duties with an extended run in Europe. The Scottish champions went all the way to the UEFA Cup final almost three years ago but the gruelling run eventually took its toll as Walter Smith's men missed out on both that trophy and the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title.
But, despite the mental and physical demands of that period, Rangers are hoping to do it all again after Thursday's away goals win over Sporting Lisbon saw them progress to the last 16 of the Europa League and a meeting with PSV Eindhoven. The focus now turns to Sunday's SPL clash with St Johnstone and Davis is determined to go all the way on all fronts once again - but with a happier ending this time around. "We will just try and learn from the experience of a few years ago," said the midfielder. "We will try to go as far as we can in each competition. It went down to the wire in every one the last time around. "There is still a lot of football to be played and a long way to go before we can get to that stage but we will hopefully do as well as possible. "To get to a European final was tremendous and we were delighted to get there so we will try to get as far as we can again this time. "The demands on us as a club are to win every game we take part in and that's what we try to do. "It's going to be a big ask but hopefully the manager will be able to freshen things up. "We have seen already a few of the younger boys coming in and doing well and I'm sure they will get another opportunity between now and the end of the season." Nikica Jelavic is set to return against St Johnstone having been ineligible to face Sporting Lisbon, but Steven Naismith (hamstring) and Jamie Ness (groin) continue to miss out. Saints manager Derek McInnes is optimistic ahead of his side's trip to Ibrox but does not expect Rangers to have a European hangover. McInnes knows opposite number Smith has the resources available to rotate his squad and insert fresh bodies and believes fatigue from their exertions in Portugal will not be a factor on Sunday. "It would be nice, but I don't expect it," he told Press Association Sport. "I can't hide that's not something you would hope for, but at the same time Rangers are able to freshen their team up and whatever team we face on Sunday they'll be of a calibre and a level very, very difficult for us. "I expect a really tough match, regardless if Rangers had got through the tie or not. "I'm more concentrating on what we'll give Rangers and hopefully that's a tough game. "Sunday's just about us going down there prepared and wanting to put in a performance we're capable of and hopefully it will be enough to get a result." And the former Rangers midfielder expects the announcement this week that Ally McCoist will succeed Smith as boss next season will also aid his former team. He added: "If you're a player there it's good to have that stability and reassurance. "Everybody's alluded to it and it was a foregone conclusion, but the fact it's been set in stone now and put out in the public domain I think it can only be a good thing." Danny Invincibile could make his debut for Saints but Jody Morris (back), Jamie Adams (ankle) and Kevin Moon (groin) are doubts.

Lennon is well aware of the threat the Englishman could pose to the Hoops' Clydesdale Bank Premier League title hopes. "I know him, he was at Rangers," the Parkhead boss said. "It's a good bit of business for Motherwell to bring someone of his experience to the club. "He is a good player and knows where the goal is. "He's crafty, he flits in and out of games and suddenly pops up with a goal. "He's already made his mark, he's scored against Aberdeen so he is someone we will need to keep an eye on." Beram Kayal is suspended for Sunday`s encounter while Freddie Ljungberg has a calf problem and will resume training next week. On-form Celtic are strong favourites to cement their place at the top of the SPL. The Hoops are eight points ahead of Old Firm rivals Rangers albeit having played two games more than the champions. Motherwell, for their part, have blown hot and cold recently and after being thrashed 6-0 against Rangers at Ibrox they picked up maximum points away to Aberdeen and against Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton at Fir Park. However, it was back to square one when they were beaten at home by struggling St Mirren in midweek but Lennon expects a tough afternoon. "They had a bad result at Ibrox and bounced back with two decent results against Aberdeen and Hamilton," the Hoops boss said. "I'm sure Stuart will be disappointed by the way they played on Wednesday night. They didn't do themselves justice. "But we know they will be up for the game. "It's live on television, there should be a good crowd there and the players will realise that they probably let their manager down and he will be looking for a reaction from them. "Fir Park has always been a difficult place to get a result and I can't see Sunday being any different." Motherwell manager McCall will tell his players to get the ball forward more quickly against Celtic. Motherwell missed the chance to go fourth on Wednesday when they lost 1-0 at home to St Mirren with a performance McCall branded "unacceptable". The former Scotland midfielder felt his players lacked St Mirren's hunger but he was also frustrated that they struggled to get the ball out wide to Jamie Murphy and the recalled Chris Humphrey. And McCall has told his players to adapt to the barren and sandy Fir Park pitch when they face the Clydesdale Bank Premier League leaders. "We've got a lot of good footballers in the side but at this stage of the season the conditions of the parks for playing free-flowing football is not great," he said. "I think the other night we over-did the football by trying to play too many passes in wrong areas of the park. "Some people think `well, at least you are trying to play the right way'. Sometimes you have to weigh up what's needed in any given game. "At times we needed to get the ball in the box and create pressure. "We were taking too many passes, and struggling to get the ball under control, to get the ball where we wanted to be. We didn't need 10 passes, we just needed two or three." Murphy accepted his manager's criticism after McCall suffered what he described as his biggest disappointment since taking charge two months ago. "He is a very determined guy, you could see that when he was playing," Murphy said. "That's the way he played and that's the way he manages. "It would be weird if he didn't come in and shout at us after the game. "All the boys accepted that, it was our fault we didn't play well." McCall could be without four or five first-team players for the clash. Stephen Craigan is suspended and Steve Jones, Steven Saunders (both hamstring) and Bob McHugh (wrist) definitely miss out, while Keith Lasley (ribs) and Steve Jennings (Achilles) are "touch and go".
Craig Levein's Scotland side meet Brazil at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium on March 27, and with Driver's eligibility question-mark now resolved he could make his debut. Driver, who has made three appearances as a substitute this season, would be eager to play against the country which has produced five World Cup-winning teams, but knows he must first win back his place in the Hearts team, starting against United. The 23-year-old Oldham-born winger said: "It would be a good game to play in - everyone will be looking forward to that one (against Brazil). "I'm not even going to think about it, I'm more bothered if I play at the weekend and the next few games for Hearts. "With Hearts doing so well, you've got to look at the first step - I've got to do well to get back in the team as it is. "Hopefully down the line I'll be able to think about it (Scotland), but my first priority is obviously playing here." United have doubts over Craig Conway and Morgaro Gomis. The pair picked up knocks against Celtic last Sunday and have only done minimal training this week. Boss Peter Houston will give them late fitness tests. United will be definitely be without long-term injury-victims Mihael Kovacevic (knee), Darren Dods (knee) and Scott Severin (ankle). Houston admits it will be difficult to catch Hearts in the race for third place - but not an impossible mission. The Tangerines are 22 points behind Jim Jefferies' side, albeit with four games in hand, as they look to finish in behind the Old Firm for the second successive season. Having nine matches called off throughout the campaign has not allowed Houston's players to get into their stride, but if they can win at Tynecastle it will reinvigorate their European challenge. Houston said: "Hearts have a big lead and it is going to be very difficult to catch them. "But our ambition is to still finish third and we won't give up on that until it's beyond us."
Kilmarnock are set for a triple boost ahead of the trip to Pittodrie. Goalkeeper Cammy Bell missed the second half of the defeat to Hibernian through illness, while Frazer Wright was out with concussion. Both are set to return for the weekend action, while Alexei Eremenko is back from suspension. Kieran Agard is confident he can get among the goals following the departure of Conor Sammon. The striker joined the Ayrshire club on loan from Everton on transfer deadline day, as Killie's top goalscorer was completing his own move to Wigan. The 21-year-old may not have been recruited as a direct replacement for Sammon but believes he will contribute his fair share of goals this season. He said: "There has been no pressure put on me by any of the lads or the staff and I try not to put too much pressure on myself. "I just go out there and play my football. I'm a striker so I'm confident I will score goals and knowing that people are watching me to score my goals drives me on. "I haven't set myself any targets to be honest. I just want to get my first goal and keep on working from there."
Right-back Paul Connolly is still struggling with a hamstring strain after missing last week's win at Bristol City, so recent loan signing Eric Lichaj will continue after making his debut at the weekend. Manager Simon Grayson has no new injury or suspension problems but is unlikely to make any unforced changes, so Davide Somma, Billy Paynter and Ross McCormack are expected to start on the substitutes' bench again. Leeds, unbeaten in five league games, are chasing a third straight win in a bid to leapfrog Norwich in the top six. Norwich will be without Leon Barnett for the trip. Former West Brom centre-back Barnett injured his hamstring in last weekend`s win over Reading and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Manager Paul Lambert is hoping to add a loan signing to his squad as cover but not in time to face Leeds, so Zak Whitbread will start at Elland Road. Midfielder Andrew Surman made his return from a long-standing knee injury as a substitute last time out and is an option to start. The Canaries could go second in the table with a win but have not won at Elland Road since August 1993 - when a brace from Ruel Fox set them on the way to a 4-0 win.
Striker Jason Scotland has been talking up a move back to former club Swansea but came off the bench to score at Oakwell last weekend and was back in the starting XI for the 6-0 thrashing of Doncaster in midweek. He will be flanked by Lee Martin and Connor Wickham - who scored his first career hat-trick at the Keepmoat. Goalkeeper Brian Murphy has stepped up his comeback from a broken ankle after coming out of plaster and will be back in around six weeks, meaning Marton Fulop will continue. Hull's new loan signing Jack Hobbs could go straight into the starting line-up. Hobbs, 22, joined the Tigers from Leicester until the end of the season on Tuesday to team back up with former Foxes boss Nigel Pearson. City will be without Paul McShane, who has joined Barnsley in a two-month loan deal. Pearson will also be able to call on James Harper after the midfielder missed the last two games due to a foot problem. Goalkeeper Vito Mannone, on loan from Arsenal, is still working his way back to full fitness after a groin injury and winger Richard Garcia is making steady progress following knee surgery. Pearson has no new injury or suspension problems as his side look to extend their unbeaten league run to eight games.
Danns (back) and Marrow (ankle) were forced to miss last weekend's defeat at Coventry and will be handed late checks. Nathaniel Clyne is playing despite a persistent knee injury which has restricted his training and he should be patched-up again. Fellow full-back Lee Hills remains a long-term absentee with a knee injury. Winger Kieran Djilali this week joined Chesterfield on a month's loan. Richard Cresswell is the latest injury doubt for Micky Adams' depleted Sheffield United squad. Adams is already without a long list of players as his side look to climb out of the bottom three with their first win since he took charge nine games ago. Defenders Chris Morgan, Andy Taylor and Ryan France, goalkeeper Richard Wright as well as striker Darius Henderson remain long-term absentees. Midfielder Nick Montgomery is now sidelined due to a knee injury and Cresswell is also struggling with a similar complaint. Another striker, Ched Evans, is doubtful as he is recovering from illness and, with Jamie Ward joining Derby on loan this week, that leaves Marcus Bent as the only option to partner new loan signing Sam Vokes up front. Midfielder Bjorn Helge Riise, who made his debut off the bench against Reading in midweek after arriving on loan from Fulham, is expected to play a bigger role at Palace, but full-back Rob Kozluk sits out the last of his three-match ban.
Central defender Alex Pearce remains sidelined as he recovers from a thigh injury but striker Shane Long appears to be showing no discomfort from his recent hip problem. Long required injections to play for club and country in recent weeks but took his tally to 11 goals in 14 games with the opener at Bramall Lane. Fellow forward Mathieu Manset is a doubt after he picked up a calf niggle. Adam Thompson could make his full league debut for Watford. The teenage right-back came off the bench to score the equaliser in the midweek draw with Preston and could be in from the start in place of Lloyd Doyley at the Madejski Stadium. Doyley has been struggling with a hamstring injury and was replaced at the break on Tuesday by the impressive Thompson. Matt Whichelow also came on at half-time to score and could replace Danny Drinkwater in Malky Mackay's plans. Winger Will Buckley is out with an ankle injury while striker Marvin Sordell could come in after fully recovering from his recent foot injury. Youngster Michael Bryan is still missing with an ankle injury and completes the injury list for the Hornets.

Jake Buxton is still nursing a slight groin problem while Russell Anderson remains out with a calf injury. Sol Bamba is a concern for Leicester ahead of the trip. The Ivory Coast centre-back was forced off with an ankle injury late on in the home victory over Barnsley last weekend. Boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is considering recalling club captain Matt Oakley to face his former club. The midfielder has started only four games since the Swede took charge in October. However, Eriksson has turned to the 33-year-old to make an impact as a substitute in recent games and the manager has hinted he may call upon Oakley at Pride Park. "He took the bad medicine to sit on the bench but he is working harder and harder to show me I am wrong," said Eriksson. "He is clever. He came on in the last two games and was fantastic. He calms everything down. On Saturday we kept the ball better when he came on. He is technically good and he also has plenty of experience." If Oakley gets the nod, Japan international Yuki Abe will make way.
Goalkeeper Vito Mannone, on loan from Arsenal, remains sidelined with a groin injury, so Brad Guzan will continue, while strike pair Matty Fryatt and Aaron Mclean will be looking to add to the five goals they scored between them at Glanford Park. Midfielder Tom Cairney was forced off against Scunthorpe and replaced by player-coach Nick Barmby, but is expected to be in contention again, but winger Richard Garcia is still working his way back following knee surgery. Preston boss Phil Brown could swing the axe when he returns to Hull with his side rock-bottom of the Championship. North End have yet to win since Brown was appointed last month and were thumped 4-0 at home by Bristol City last weekend. Rookie defender Conor McLaughlin suffered a fracture to his left fibula and a dislocated ankle in that loss and now faces six to eight months on the sidelines. However, Brown this week signed Everton goalkeeper Iain Turner on an emergency loan and said: "We have brought him in to create a more competitive environment for our current goalkeeper Andrew Lonergan." On-loan Blackburn midfielder Amine Linganzi remains sidelined with a groin injury, as does striker Iain Hume with a hamstring strain.
Fellow midfielder Whittingham is suffering with a dead leg while full-back Kevin Naughton came off at half-time in last Sunday`s 1-0 win at Swansea with a hamstring problem. Craig Bellamy netted a late wonder goal to secure all three points at the Liberty Stadium but with five games in 15 days now coming up he may well be rested against the struggling Iron. Lee Naylor missed out against the Swans but is now back in full training, as is Stephen McPhail (hamstring) who will be keen to build on his return to the bench last weekend. Scunthorpe boss Ian Baraclough is again beset by injuries for the trip but Abdisalam Ibrahim is available after suspension. Goalkeeper Joe Murphy remains sidelined with a groin injury and defensive duo Rob Jones and David Mirfin are still out as they recover from back and thigh injuries respectively. Rookie centre-back Niall Canavan is still troubled by tendonitis, Michael O'Connor remains out with a knee injury and Cliff Byrne is battling his way back to fitness after a back problem. Garry Thompson, meanwhile, has undergone a minor operation on the groin injury which has disrupted his season. The Iron have lost 10 of their last 12 games, are without a win at home since August and lie second-bottom of the Championship.
He`s very excited about it and it will be great to see him back." With Maynard back in the frame, Millen could opt to stick with the three-pronged attack of Brett Pitman, Andy Keogh and David Clarkson that finished the game at Preston last weekend. If selected, defender Louis Carey will make his 600th appearance for the club. Leeds manager Simon Grayson has confirmed new loan signing Eric Lichaj will start. American international Lichaj, drafted in from Aston Villa for an initial month this week, will step in for Paul Connolly, who is sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Striker Sanchez Watt is still out after missing the last two games due to a similar problem. Winger Robert Snodgrass is expected to be fit following his debut for Scotland in the midweek Carling Nations Cup win over Northern Ireland. But Grayson has yet to check on strikers Davide Somma and Ramon Nunez, who were also on international duty this week, for South Africa and Honduras respectively. Grayson has no other new injury or suspension problems as his side look to keep pace with the automatic promotion chasers.
"Bobby has done brilliantly in his absence, but if he is fit he will play." Robins has no new injury or suspension problems and although defender Jay McEveley is back in full training following a knee injury, he is still a few weeks away from a return to action. Fellow defender Luke Potter is the only absentee due to a knee injury, while on-loan pair Jacob Mellis, from Chelsea, and West Ham's Frank Nouble are expected to retain their places in the starting line-up. Ipswich manager Paul Jewell will wait on his returning internationals before naming his squad. Town had 10 players away with their nations during the week and the likes of Gareth McAuley, Tamas Priskin, Jaime Peters and Marton Fulop were not due back until Friday. Winger Luciano Civelli came off the bench in last weekend's 3-0 win against Sheffield United to make his first appearance since sustaining knee ligament damage in March 2009 and he will be in the squad again. Goalkeeper Brian Murphy has stepped up his comeback from a broken ankle after coming out of plaster and will be back in around six weeks so Fulop will continue. Midfielder Andy Drury could be included for the first time since his deadline-day move from non-league outfit Luton while striker Jason Scotland will feature despite being linked with a return to Swansea.
Westwood, meanwhile, missed the chance to come on for the Republic of Ireland in midweek due to a sore calf but should be okay. Skipper Lee Carsley (Achilles and hernia surgery) and centre-back Ben Turner (knee) are back in training but Saturday is likely to come just too soon. Midfielder Sammy Clingan withdrew from international duty with Northern Ireland in midweek due to his troublesome knee injury and is not expected to be fit. Nathan Cameron, Jordan Clarke and Freddy Eastwood all featured for their respective nations and came through unscathed. Central defender James McPake remains sidelined for the foreseeable future with his lower back complaint. Nathaniel Clyne and Neil Danns are likely to miss out for Palace. Right-back Clyne was this week ruled out of the England Under-20 clash with France due to a knee injury and is set to lose his ever-present record this season. Midfielder Danns is still struggling with the back problem which sidelined him for last Saturday's win over Middlesbrough and manager Dougie Freedman rates him doubtful. David Wright, who moved into the midfield in Danns' absence, could now drop back into the defence to fill in for Clyne. Striker James Vaughan will lead the line again after playing an hour for England's Under-21s in midweek. Full-back Lee Hills remains a long-term absentee with a knee injury.
